8 bit Modern

I took the kids over to the BYU Museum of art for the opening of 8 bit Modern by Michael Whiting.  In my 2D art class we were talking about places you could go for extra credit and the opening of this exhibit was one of them. The exhibit is located in the sculpture garden. The sculptures resemble minimalist sculpture. As you get closer your view of the monolithic 8 bit sculpture changes and the simple shapes become more flat. The size of each piece invites you to look at it from all angles. The naturalistic pieces already in the garden disappear with the addition of these brightly colored pieces. Having a toddler who wanted to climb on them also helped me to see them from different perspectives. Each piece is very playful. It was nice to be there before the party started to have a little bit of solitude with them and reflect on my youth playing simple videogames. I came away from this exhibit very happy and nostalgic.

Probably Felix's favorite one. He liked the water mostly I think...

This is the buck.
The boys loved the colored crispy treats. There were also blocks on the table to create your own 8 bit work of art. This was a great for toddlers!

The duck.

Calvin also had fun.
We had a lot of fun at the Museum and the outdoor party was a great end to a fun evening.

Also, you should check out the beauty and belief exhibit. It is amazing.
