Halloween!

We visited a corn maze in Vineyard. It was perfect for small kids. They had lots of farm animals and a tour of a vegetable patch and a spooky pumpkin barn.
The boys in their costumes. They were cute.
It rained so hard Saturday night. We had few trick or treaters. We braved the bad weather and got some candy for dad. Can you guess who we were?

The Scarlet Pimpernel

A few weeks ago I saw the play "The Scarlet Pimpernel". I saw it for my Theater class and I was suposed to watch the play and think about Goeth's 3 questions. Here is my response paper to the play.

The Scarlet Pimpernel

By Katie Tungate

Goeth’s three questions help theater and moviegoers see a deeper meaning in their entertainment. Most importantly the questions internalize and personalize what you view. On October 28th, 2010 I saw the Scarlet Pimpernel performed at the Hale Center Theater in Orem. This was a familiar play to me. By thinking about these questions while I watched the Scarlet Pimpernel I was able to view the play in a different light.

What was the artist trying to achieve?

The main subject matter of The Scarlet Pimpernel is to show that the noble cause of the French revolution had become distorted and was out of hand. I think the play shows that the reason for the out of control nature of the revolution was directly linked to those who ran it. The play personifies the notion that the aristocrat or educated man was born to lead and the common or uneducated man was born to follow. This theme is subtlety throughout the play. Marguerite goes through a transition before the play begins. At the beginning of the French revolution she is a full supporter of the cause. It is alluded to that her views begin to change through her courtship with Percy.

How well did he or she achieve it? I think that the theme I saw in the play was done well as a subtle underling theme. The costuming, lighting, and sets reflect the difference between aristocratically run England and democratically run France. England is bright, lavishly decorated, beautifully costumed and the characters seem very cheery. In France there is a haze in the air it is darker the costumes are plain and tattered and the characters are macabre. There is also a contrast in the love songs from Percy and Chauvelin. In Chauvelin’s song, “Where’s the Girl” you get the feeling that their love was more base and animal. Percy’s song “You are my Home”, shows a romance and exudes a feeling of true deep love. In scene six Percy is discussing the French revolution with his friends. They decide to do something to save the innocent from Madame Guillotine. In this scene Percy mentions that he and his friends are all educated smart men and would easily be able to out wit the French. Percy and his men go on to save many lives and make fools of Chauvelin.

Was it worth doing? I think that what I saw in the plot shows the bias of the original author, Baroness Orczy, who was herself an aristocrat who had to leave her home because of the threat of a peasant uprising. She spent most of her life in England. The English are also renowned for their hatred of the French. The play slyly shows that the educated aristocrat should be leading the country and not the poor uneducated masses. Which is why I don’t think the play was worth doing.

On one hand it does show the value of an education. Which none would say is unimportant. What the play does show is the complicated nature of war. Chauvelin is caught between the love of his country and his love for Marguerite. He chooses to betray her trust for what he sees as for the good of the people of France. The play is also very fun and entertaining. These are the reasons the play is worth seeing.

I think I am a little biased myself in my viewing of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Prior to seeing the play I was reading some of Karl Marx’s work for a sociology class. This is the reason I think that I picked out the theme and plot the way that I did. I am pretty sure that Karl Marx would see Chauvelin as a tragic hero of the people and not the antagonist. Using these questions really got me thinking about the Scarlet Pimpernel on a different level. (I may have read a little too much into this play)

I thought it was an interesting take on the Scarlet Pimpernel. Do you agree with me? It is also a fun play and I do recommend seeing it if you liked the old movie.

Deodorizing Expectations

I have never been satisfied with any deodorant I have ever used. I have even tried the organic crystals. (I wanted to stop using anti perspirents, alas I could not stand smelling after 2 hours.)
I am wary of the clinical strength ones, has anyone tried them?
I have been a Degree Girl for a long time now that seems to be what works best for me. I was super sad when they created the women's line for Degree because the other stuff worked sooo good. I am happy with my wetness protection, but it is the smell. I feel like after 4 hours of use it stops working.
I am so unsatisfied that I am thinking about trying Justin deodorant out.
What I am looking for is a deodorant that lasts more than 5 hours, like 7 or 8. Good wetness protection, and a pleasant smell.
Am I expecting to much from this product?

The Invisible shoe

Many of you who know me know that I usually wear flip flops. Even in the winter. Justin has been doing research recently on barefoot running. My brother got a pair of the Vibram 5 finger shoes. Which I really liked the concept of, but Justin can't wear them (webbed toes), and they are a bit pricy. So we started looking at other options. There are a few,The vivo by Terra Plana, which Justin got to run track practice in. (Also, Terra Planna has some super cute women's shoes!) Nike has some and there are many others.
We also found the Invisible shoe. I have wanted to make my own scandals for a while now, and this was a great option for me.
Here are the top 5 reasons why I like mine:
1. I like to be bare foot, this is the closest I can get to it.
2. I can run in them. i think that it is the coolest thing ever.
3. I get to make them myself.
4. I can change the look of the shoe by changing how I tie it.
5. The price
I had problems with them at first, mostly they were tight around my heals and irritated the top of my foot and they slid forward. But all these problems are fixable with a little practice tying them and just plain experience from wearing them. Anyways check them out. They are super cool and will last a really long time. They have improved my running form and they are supposed to help with joint pain and be better for you all around.

Orchids, I love them

So many of you know that Justin and I have started an Orchid collection. It is very addicting. Luckly for us there is only one place in Utah that sells orchids. It is called Orchid Dynasty. it is on 9th in Salt Lake. I really love going there. The owners are super informed and always are willing to answer questions and give great suggestions. The flower arrangements are also beautiful. It is super hard to not buy one of everything that we don't have. The last time we were there We spent 30 min. trying to figure out if we had room to buy 2 more orchids. We found it :) but really we don't have any more room. Next time you are in P.G. stop buy and we will show you our little tropical haven.

Hoggle Zoo!

As a family we went to the Hoggle Zoo. It was a blast we got free tickets and saw almost everything.
Felix enjoyed riding the carousel.
He enjoyed seeing the birds.
Altogether we weighed as much as a baby elephant. Also, the baby elephant was super cute.
This little monkey came right over to us! He got super excited and started bouncing and kicking his baby legs.

Fourth of July picture update!

These are the sparkler pops I made for the 4th. Super easy: melt chocolate, pour a little onto wax paper, add stick and sprinkles, wait for chocolate to set. I had a hard time with the milk chocolate setting, so I just froze those ones.
(Also, don't use olive oil. It will give your chocolate an off flavor)
Sparklers!
I love sparkler pictures. I with I had taken more this year.

The Finale of Cul De Sac of Fire 2010.

The best part of The 4th of July for me was hanging out with all my family.
Yeah family!!!!

Vacation Fun!

We spent 5 days in Anaheim with my family. I had a lot of fun. Felix enjoyed watching all the kids and the bright colors and music.

We also spent a week in Hollister with the Tungates. Felix really enjoyed all the attention from his cousins.
Felix tried licking the pole every time we rode the carousel.
So cute! unfortunately when I tried to upload my pictures they all got deleted. I was sad. but thankfully everyone else took pictures!

Grandma and Grandpa Tungate with the Grandchildren. They really had a houseful that week. More pictures from our trip to come!

What I have been up to lately

Here is a list of what I have been up to:
  • My brother got home from his mission a few weeks ago, so there has been a lot of hanging out and fun stuff going on with that.
  • I also have been working on getting registered for school in the fall. I know, amazing after so many years on not wanting to, and just not caring about it. I am finally going to do it. It feels like a lot of hurry up and wait right now, but I am excited to get started.
  • Gardening! I need to go out and take pictures. We have soooo many squash coming up! P.S. if you burry your squash and pumpkins seeds will come up! Also, if you have dried beans and they get put into the garden they will also sprout and grow. We currently have the 7 bean stew package growing in one part of the garden. We have lots of flowers coming up. My favorite are the Islandic Poppies.
  • Dragon Ball Z. It is cheezy, but my senior year of high school I started watching it with my brothers after school. It recently started playing on nicktoons. And I am just loving it. My sister found a website with all the episodes on it. So I have been watching a lot of Drangon Ball, Z, Kai, and GT. Consequently the next few rats we get will be named Ratataz, Vegeta, Kakorat Piccilo...
  • Playing with our Baby. He is so cute! We started solid food. He is enjoying it sooo much. Justin and I have decided to make our own baby food. So far it is not to hard. Just boil whatever you want your child to eat. Blend it up in the blender with a little water and store what you are not using in ice cube form. (thanks for the great idea Melanie!)
  • Preparing for Summer vacation! Cutie Pants and I will be going to California for a few weeks. We will be going to Disneyland with my family for a few days!!! Then it is off to Hollister to visit Justin's family and have fun with them. It is only a few weeks away! I can't wait!!!!!!!
  • Training with Justin. I have been going to the track with Justin and running and doing drills and stuff with him. He has been very patient and good with me. I feel great, and hopefully will be able to fit into some of my old pants soon ;)
  • Justin has been going to school this summer. He is also preparing to go to India this spring semester. He has lots to read and a class to take. I am very excited for him. It is crazy, as soon as he told me about it I knew it was the right thing for our family. (the baby and I will not be going) He has promised to bring back spices and some fantastic recipes as well. I am very excited for him!!!
Well that is what we have been up to. More news and pictures to come soon!

Sherlock Holmes

OK, so a few weeks ago I saw the movie.
I actually really liked it.
I feel a little bad that I was so anti it.
(that does NOT mean I will see Avatar. I won't do it.)
I especially liked the story that they chose. I wish they had a different girl, (Rachel Mc Adams just seemed woody and not believable. which is sad because she is such a fun character.) but I would be happy with another movie.
If they do what I think they will do as a sequel it should be pretty awesome.
So, see it if you are looking for something entertaining and fun, and also clever.
Good Job Guy!

Favorite Chefs

I have been thinking lately about what Chefs have inspired me and made me want to innovate with my own food and taste and try new things.
Here is a quick list:
Alton Brown: I love the science that goes into Good Eats. It makes me think about why the food I make tastes so good. Also The show has made certain foods less scary and daunting, like Okra and Tamales.
Bobby Flay: I think every time I have watched him cook it has sounded delicious. I also really like Throw down, What a fun challenge for a chef. I remember the first time I saw him on Iron Chef Japan. Amazing! Also, I would love to eat at one of his restaurants. That would be soooo amazing!
Martin Yan : Yan can cook and so can you! He always made me feel good about myself every time I watched his show. I felt excited about food and it really got me interested in eastern cuisine.
Masaharu Morimoto: I just love his creativity and skill. Watching him on Iron chef Japan when I was young made me want to eat fish. My mouth would be watering by the end of an episode.
Giada De Laurentils: So many of the things on her show are so simpleand they taste good too. I love how passionate about food she is. She just makes me happy when I watch her show. And she has a sweet name!

Food is amazing. The older I get the more I love it!

Also, I love cooking with Justin. He always has great suggestions. He is the best sous chef I could ever have asked for!!!!

Who do you love to watch ? Who makes you want to cook?

Thank Heavens for the Food Network! I just hope the Cooking Channel is as good.

Happy Mothers Day!

Thanks again to all the women who have been in my life! I am continually grateful for the strong examples I have had from Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Friends, Teachers and Leaders. I would not be who I am without you. Make sure you celebrate being a woman and womanhood! What an awesome thing it is!
